Drawing inspiration from all things that make a city tick, Colombian artist STINKFISH turns faces of unsuspecting people into vibrant portraits full of energetic emotion.

With work created on reclaimed surfaces such as vintage record covers, magazines and metal shelving, STINKFISH's work cleverly mixes beauty and grit. Using a color palate that captures the flavor of the South American streets, this artist's imagery does often originate from his own camera lens, but with all the time spent hitting the pavement, it's no surprise discarded snap-shots are used at times to tell a story.

Striking women, proud men or gaze-filled children are often the subjects before STINKFISH adds his signature touch ---an intricate tribal pattern to their features. Whether it be using stencil techniques or hand-drawing these patterns, Colombia's premiere street artist's images evoke a sense of cultural pride all while mixing in his post-youthful discontent and love of punk music.

Canadian artist OTHER has been kicking around this scene long before the term 'street artist' was one. Beginning with his freight train paintings that often consist of chalk white, weathered-faced vagabonds, floating on top of colorfully patterned, twisting-limb figures, OTHER has always made it a point to immerse himself in the very same culture he depicts.

Other

Symbolic shapes, utensils, and typography in and around figures are the "sign language" he uses to communicate thoughts, ideas and dreams aloud. Curiosity often takes OTHER down the most windy roads, in the most remote places to seek out locations to work outdoors. These journeys often later feed into the back story of his paintings. Sometimes old signage, numbers, text bits and tags from other artists who've left their mark can become unplanned collaborations of sorts. Traveling and painting in places like northern Serbia, Chile and Romania with stories that seems to rival those of Hunter S. Thompson, no city or town is too far off the beaten path for this nomad artist.

On the heels of his highly successful "Inferno" exhibition in Italy earlier this year, Guy Denning presents the second of his three part series of oil paintings on Dante's Commedia in New York City for the aptly titled exhibition, "Purgatorio".

Originally drawing inspiration from Dante's writings, Guy's intention has not been to recreate the poem in a visual or literal sense, but instead let it act as a framework for his own personal interpretation. As with the writing of Shakespeare, Guy finds a perpetual relevance in Dante's work where the specifics of name, situation and place are easily adapted to the modern world; as if time moves on but the problems of humanity remain essentially the same.

The events of September 11th and the emotional toll it took on the American individual is final and critical element to this body of work. Guy suggests that the suffering of America is too often defined by the media in terms of the political rather than the personal, leaving the individual voice of ordinary people sometimes unspoken in the narrative of history. His work sets out to make a small and personal amendment to that omission. Poignantly enough, this exhibition will be held in a NYC 'Pop-Up' location just blocks from Ground Zero and on the 10 Year Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The work, though tied to Dante’s writing will also feature elements of images found on the internet, particularly of people in New York City on that terrible day. Significant press images are also used as reference for Guy's work in hopes that they will be scrutinized that much more intensely than the photos we glance at far too quickly in newsprint. He has also constructed one large landscape painting, in the fashion of the traditional ‘history’ genre, made from connected canvas panels. This oil painting, derived from studying still frame images from amateur video footage, aims to create an assumed and complete narrative of the major elements of the day from a New York perspective.

Guy states that this is a collection of work recognizing the suffering of the American people on September 11th and immediately thereafter - when the United States had the sympathy of the world. He wants it to be viewed as nothing short of respectful to the memories of all those that died and suffered as a result – both in New York and beyond. Guy quotes another English artist William Blake who wrote “Can I see another's woe, and not be in sorrow, too? Can I see another's grief, and not seek for kind relief?” Despite the many cultural differences of the peoples of the world we are all essentially united by our humanity; our common desires, hopes and despairs. It is the ordinary people's common humanity that will take us forward and not politically inspired violence.

On a summers night in the heart of Brooklyn, Miss Bugs will open the doors to her new establishment, the "Parlour". Miss Bugs alias 'The Madame' welcomes you to her boudoir, fit for gods and monsters; a place where delights and nightmares can be played out. You’ll be introduced to the still-standing ghosts in the woodland clearing who guard the entrance to the "Parlour" that lies beyond... Here, the Madames' presence can be felt in every corner; you can look directly into her eyes and view the story of her dark desires… Madame advises all who attend the opening to dress appropriately to honor the spirits and hide their face by donning a masquerade mask.

"Parlour" is the setting for Miss Bugs' new body of work; its atmosphere will unsettle. By placing the prints and large scale collages within a fictional space, the context of the original sources of found art is changed, making us view its symbolism in a different, darker light. This distorted world of installations indoors and out, is an extension of their 'Cut Out and Fade Out' street project and the concept of the 'Parlour' exploits the idea that the art establishment plays on people’s desires, whether for money, beauty, sex or ownership. It’s a twisted environment with poetically warped female forms that beckon you in and carry you off to the underbelly of Miss Bugs’ soul.

The opening of ‘Parlour’ marks Miss Bugs’ second solo gallery appearance since their debut outing over three years ago and is their first solo show outside the UK. Miss Bugs have come together again for their most ambitious project to-date…

They continue to explore the themes which have been prevalent in their work, such as the nature of the art establishment. Miss Bugs continues to question the ownership of ideas, working methods, and the relationship and knock-on effect that artists have with one another. And while their work often sees the appropriation of hundreds of contemporary artists; they are all referenced and recomposed within their collages and silk-screens to make their own newly reconstructed iconic pieces. Miss Bugs steals from many, but in doing so they leave their own unique indelible mark; a Miss Bugs calling card at the scene of the crime!

GUY DENNING • STENCIL SERIES

Two series of Guy Denning stencil prints now available in our Shop/Prints Section.

It's not enough that Guy Denning has painting skills most would die for. Now comes his first foray into a stencil print series which packs a bold, powerful punch. Politically charged, emotionally poignant and beauty to boot, the title for this series is lifted from a poem by William Blake titled, On Another's Sorrow.

Executed on lightly coated newsprint, each stencil print measures 16 x 23 inches (58cm H x 41cm W) and is unique in color and embellishments. Each image is an edition of 33 and priced at $175 each.

"Each complete set consists of two different portraits. There are 33 of each portrait (one for each canto of the Purgatory). One is of a New York resident and the other of a Fallujah resident. The two pieces take their titles from the first two lines of a poem by William Blake: Can I see Another's Woe, And not be in sorrow too? Can I see another's grief, And not seek for kind relief?

At first the plan was to release a limited print, however the only medium available to me in my own studio would have been a wood or lino cut and I did not feel that it suited the subject matter.

I wanted to incorporate text so stenciling seemed appropriate, particularly since I've been using stenciled text in my paintings for years now. My method of building an image by stencil also allows a high degree of variation between repeated versions of the same idea.

This then became an exercise in personally further developing my competence in another paint media. I have now built for myself a method that allows me to produce a limited edition, that though bearing general similarities, hold an almost infinite capacity for individual experimentation.

Though each piece can take up to two hours painting time, it is still to some degree more dependent on a fixed, repeated method. I have arrived at something approaching serial paintings or repeat mono-prints and it's a method I will develop further in the future."

Even today, if you walk around the streets of New York City with your chin up, you'll see the work of ELIK, who seamlessly exists between street art and graffiti, leaving his mark in the form of innovative roller tags, wheat-pastes, throw-ups, and retro-fitted tin signs. After vanishing from the New York City art scene in 2005, transient artist ELIK, returns for a project encompassing his broad range of genres inside one space for the first time since he left.

Inspired by all things discarded, the artist "formerly known" as ELIK-- hasn't exactly changed his name, nor has he stopped making work, both on and off the streets in his new location. His indoor work is comprised largely of paintings and intricate collages informed by typography and appropriated images from various media of our throw away culture. His bold and eye catching work is fused together utilizing xerox copies and original material from vintage magazines, books, found scraps, advertisements and invented images, to create a unique visual language.

In addition, ELIK's been hoarding scrap wood, furniture, metal signage and a hell of a lot of city trash with plans to turn this place into some sort of 'shanty town'. He's politely insisted we turn the space over to him and find something else to do until opening night.

Speaking of opening night-- the turntables will be manned by none other than the 'Godfather of Hip-Hop', DJ KOOL HERC. After battling some much publicized health issues a few months back, KOOL HERC is ready to get back to doing what he does best-- rock a crowd.

Legendary Graffiti Artist : COST

From the late 80's to the early 90's you couldn't take two steps in and around NYC without seeing two names in bold black letters:

"COST" & "REVS"

These tags came in the form of xerox printed sheets of paper with phrases such as "COST FUCKED MADONNA" & "SUICIDE REVS" pasted mostly on the backs of DON'T WALK boxes --but also just about everywhere else. Not long after came roller tags, billboard bombing and larger wheat-pastes other artists would like to take credit for inventing.

After some major, well documented issues both artists exited from the scene.

"SUGAR JUNKIE" was a 1977 Winnebego Motor Home that had been rescued off the scrap-heap, given a tune-up and adorned with murals, stickers, tags, drawings, paste-ups and more from artists around the globe.

We teamed up with our friends at www.pawnworksstickerclub.com to introduce SUGAR JUNKIE to the public in Miami, Florida 2010 during Art Basel Week.

With boombox cranked, we took SUGAR JUNKIE on the road in and around the Wynwood and South Beach areas of Miami crashing party after party with a vehicle that was made by the people for the people. Artists and fans hopped on and off for free rides and tours of murals going up around town.

Some local artists could been seen chasing SUGAR JUNKIE on foot to take a quick tag or slap on a sticker as we cruised by.

At last count we saw these artists and more represented in one form or another somewhere on SUGAR JUNKIE:

Long before the emergence of Brooklynite Gallery, owner and curator Rae McGrath was constructing artwork of his own in many forms. Schooled in fine arts, raised immersed in the graffiti/breakdance culture of the 80's and holding down a diverse range of blue collar jobs, has allowed RAE to create an eclectic range of visuals for an exhibition aptly titled "Unconventional Conviction".

Over the years RAE has spent countless hours on the streets of New York City and other parts of the world, engaging then photographing the everyday person. Usually drawn to the elderly or youth--- because of their experiences or lack thereof, RAE often finds similarities to his own life, connecting the dots through his grainy black and white photos which are then hand-painted or silk-screened into pieces that include block text and hand-drawn areas. The second part to RAE's work involves the gathering and transformation of found objects--- namely hundreds of brightly colored plastic laundry detergent bottles. Spending ample time in and around laundromat dumpsters throughout Brooklyn, RAE has amassed quite a collection of these bottles which he then dissects, using cutting techniques once learned while working as a deli worker and butcher. His tales are told on top of mosaic patterns full of vibrant colors and textual information.

For RAE, the vivid, hopeful Pop Art color schemes and graphic detail of the laundry bottles prove to be the perfect juxtaposition to his own urban Brooklyn upbringing and the countless cast of characters of his youthful working class existence. In the end, RAE uses these dynamic combinations to his advantage creating rich and strange alternate realities.

The world's oldest known "Portrait" is believe to be created over 27,000 year ago. So why after all this time is it still the most often used subject of creation? A portrait often speaks much less about the physical features we are viewing, then it does about what's behind the gaze in ones eyes or the telling angles of their mouth. This fascination continues to intrigue us through the work of three street artists who use traditional and non-traditional techniques to create their own brand of "PORTRAITS".

Just because street art tandem, STEN & LEX are widely considered to be the pioneers of "stencil graffiti" in their Italian homeland, doesn't necessarily mean they are content with resting on the title. Best known for introducing their "halftone stencil" technique, these two self-proclamined "Hole School" artists spend ample time hand-cutting pixel dots and lines to compose their imagery which is best viewed from a distance. Choosing to forgo the common pop culture imagery often associated with street art, STEN & LEX's subject matter pulls no punches. Saints, Popes and the Italian Christian Church were primarily referenced early on --minus the often added social commentary. However, most recently and for their upcoming exhibition here, the subjects of choice comes from the historic Italian archives they've rescued. The 1960's, 70's and 80's portraits from all walks of life are the focus this time around, as they are put through the rigorous transformation of stencil cutting style that is trademark STEN & LEX. The final appearance of these portraits appear to have been fed halfway through a paper shredder then pulled back at the last minute leaving the shreds left to dangle. The images are for the most part of common folk---young and old. People who have lived lives and have stories to tell. Just read their faces.

Seems as if the young, hard charging NYC street artist GAIA has been showcasing his bold imagery to the masses since before he could walk. Well maybe it hasn't been quite that long but over the past few years he's managed to garner a lot of attention by using more traditional techniques to create his wildlife animals and distinguishing human portraits. Taking a more intelligent, reflective approach to his work, this "old soul" uses wood block carvings and hand-drawn methods to achieve the fur textures of bears, tigers and rabbits as well as the worn lines in the faces of his latest portrait series entitled, "Legacy." At it's core, "Legacy" raises the question of infrastructure design and how we are forced to live with the decisions, good or bad, created by figures such as Robert Moses, James Wilson Rouse & Mies van der Rehoboth, all of whom have shaped parts of the American landscape. GAIA also plans on featuring a series of faded self portraits called "Sunsets". Sunsets are a portrait of the nature of the street artist as an identity. It's a pseudonym, to the person behind the work and the conflict between the secret, the collective and the fame of the individual. Some of the work is directly painted onto reclaimed street posters and found materials.

Never is there more an exciting time for a gallery and it's curators than when they are in a position to present work from artists who are on the cusp of breaking out and distancing themselves from the pack. As we at Brooklynite Gallery proudly present, "Paradise Lost" a two-man exhibition by stencil-based artists C215 and Eelus ---this is clearly the case. Loosely exploring themes of innocence, wonder and the imagination we experience as kids, both artists approach these themes from unique perspectives in both subject matter and stencil technique ---clearly at the top of their games.

No other artist working in the public space today connects with the streets like C215. With striking murals in varying size and scope all over the globe, he not only paints pictures of everyday people and society's "outcasts" ---he connects with them. Portraits of the elderly, middle-aged and children are carefully chosen; often reflecting the past, present and future in the gaze of their expressions. At times his subjects gain your attention with grittiness and distress ---and his stencils are cut that way; short, sharp and of the two-color variety. Other times his subjects are radiant and fantastical ---and again, his stencils are cut that way; graceful, curved and full movement. Now, as C215 begins to evenly balance the time between doing 'street work' and having a gallery presence, we're beginning to see this well-rounded artist can no longer be put into one single 'category'. Highly regarded by his peers as one of the top stencil artists working today, more than ever C215's work exudes confidence. Continually transforming and perfecting his stencil techniques, experimenting with various surfaces and color theories, C215 doesn't have to speak a word about the range of emotions he channels through his work... We can easily see and feel it for ourselves.

On the heels of his high impact solo exhibition in London last February, UK artist Eelus has officially arrived on the scene with an unusual set of tricks up his sleeve. Toying with the future expectations of adolescence, while juxtaposing sci-fi, sexual tension and poignant text, his imagery is reminiscent of a bizarre dream you wake up from and struggle to find it's meaning. Eelus' work often feels like a still frame from a complex film that points us in the right direction, yet still manages to give us only enough information to draw our own conclusions. Depending on which strings he wants to tug, his often three-color palette is used to strike just the right emotion when applied to surfaces ranging from canvas and wood to vintage metal signage. It all seems to be coming together as Eelus' work continues to stir conversation amongst his early fans as well new ones.

GUY DENNING "RISE LIKE LIONS"

We recently had a chance to spend some time with Guy Denning at the famed Coney Island Amusement Park in Brooklyn. Inspired by his work's texture and social theories along with his own cerebral personality, we attempted to translate that into a video piece.

Brooklynite Gallery invites you to experience "Surface Tension", a joint exhibition featuring Guy Denning and David Walker, two artists, who through the human form, explore two different concepts, using two entirely different techniques.

Guy Denning

Wielding brushes and knives, Guy Denning battles a myriad of ideas that stir around in ones head in hopes that the visual translation might become the remedy. These disparate thoughts that don't connect to anyone or anything in particular are expressed through precarious self-portraits and female figures. Denning's canvases are layered with oil paint and medium thinners, then seemingly blasted with a fire-hose. His work has all the makings of a piece by a classically trained painter, yet the added angst of a back street fist-fight.

David Walker

The gestural approach Walker uses when creating his alluring female portraits can only be achieved using a self-imposed rule of "no brushes, only spray-paint" techniques. For Walker, the subject of his work inherently lies in the facial expression-- just the right one that is. Using found imagery pillaged from peoples photo albums, snapshots and old magazines, Walker's focus is on the subtleties of expressions, constantly in search of a precise emotion or tilt of the head that catches his eye and can expand the distance between his work and that of an intelligible portrait artist.

Besides the visuals you'll experience inside and out in the rear of our gallery, DJ Rekha will supply you with her own brand of audio pleasure. She invites you on journey into a world that merges the traditional Bhangra music of South Asia and the Hip-Hop beats of today. Special dance performances to take place as well.

Long term member of the Scrawl Collective (Nick Walker, Will Barras, Mr. Jago), British portrait artist, David Walker, has the ability to capture intricate details of his subjects using his trademark, multi-layered style and only a spray can. Using self-enforced constraints, such as a 'no brushes rule', David is pushing the medium in his own unique direction.

This Saturday is sure to be a show for the ages. All the right elements seem to be in place (including the weather) for an amazing opening night. The work is stellar, the installations are being constructed --the murals just about dry now.

The concept of “work” can be interpreted in many different ways depending on whom you hit up. Brooklyn-based artist, SPECTER and German duo VARIOUS & GOULD have each located discarded materials, used skill and ingenuity and re-conceptualized things in pulsating ways you might never have imagined. All this done in effort to turn the concept of “work” on its ear in an exhibition appropriately titled, “Make It Fit”.

Cart-pushers, delivery boys and slave-laborers – take the spotlight in much of the work created by the artist who goes simply by the name SPECTER. With all of his portraits based on real people living at the bottom of the capitalist barrel, Specter forces the general public to see what they might rather not – those who got left behind. Collecting materials in much the same fashion his subjects do, SPECTER incorporates shopping carts, bicycles, and crates along with engaging images of your everyday worker, paying special attention to what makes them tick. His work is hand-crafted, retro-fitted, clever and fresh.

For the creative team of VARIOUS & GOULD the concept of “work” means looking well beyond the vigor of the everyday tasks one has to perform for a paycheck and instead focusing on the surprisingly graceful interaction between a laborer and his tools. Imagine peering into the cut-out holes we often see at a construction site and being exposed to a vibrant world of multi-colored uniforms, enlarged tools and graphic text. A world where workers trade body parts depending on their needs, moving in tandem while performing their repetitive tasks in a choreographed “workers waltz”. Using found objects, work related symbols and their refined silkscreen techniques, the line between work and play becomes blurred inside the imaginative minds of VARIOUS & GOULD.

You’ve seen it on the streets – just a black square with white text. Two names, a mirror image of themselves. These discreet signs of whoever or whatever refers to itself as PERU ANA ANA PERU are backed up by an eclectic collection of ornately designed pieces of artwork-- pasted, fastened, scribbled or dangling to your left or right.

WHO ARE THEY? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? We are often asked these questions. PERU ANA ANA PERU's use of different mediums is a treat if you enjoy such things and will certainly cut up a neat freak looking to compartmentalize them. Well we may not have all the answers you've been searching for, but we do have their first solo show and hope to bring you as close to their identities as you have been so far.

"...And Then We Jumped into the Abyss of Numbers: Memories in Absurdity From the Bowels of Peru Ana Ana Peru", is the title of their exhibition. A bit long? --Maybe. Very telling? --Yes. Their "abyss of numbers" will explore the unknown, the bizarre and the surreal through multi-media paintings/drawings, sculpture and installations. Video art pieces telling strange narratives will be a key focus of the work and will offer viewers yet another peek into this duo's collective psyche. This work, harmonious with a gallery space, is also intimately connected to their street presence. At their request, we dizzily revel in the irrational.

As a much added bonus, the soundtrack to the opening night event will be performed by BOMB SQUAD [Hank Shocklee; Future Frequency]. The force behind Public Enemy and some of the most significant albums of all time with a preview of the new upcoming album of futuristic dub and live electronics.

MALCOLM X sought truth and action at all costs. He
launched an uncompromising attack on society’s most firmly
held injustices and proved, in doing so, the possibility of
overcoming any obstacle to accomplish any goal. He is
unparalleled as an icon for self-betterment and the serious
cultivation of one’s identity and belief system.

A dedicated, gifted, and legendary organizer of people,
Malcolm X always spoke to enlighten, to challenge and enrich
the beliefs of even his most dedicated followers. He always
moved forward, acting at every step to build his vision.

Any artist would do well to LIVE by these ideals. . .

An artist’s identity is always growing, outward and inward, into
the future and back to the beginning. And at the beginning,
we were KIDS. Free-spirited. No preconceived notions.

Kids love to create. We need to give them a chance to
think about what art can be -using more than just conventional
materials to express themselves ... "By Any Means Necessary".

All over the world, it’s important to recognize and encourage the
independence of thought and capacity for free association all
kids excel at. . . and we, as adults need to hold on to.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Hey y'all. . . Got a quick question for you . . .

When things don't go as planned and life gives you
a 'lemon'-- WHAT DO YOU DO?

Not sure if the answers is the same for everyone, but
for the crew at BROOKLYNITE GALLERY we take that
'lemon' and crush it into an art exhibition for the
most impressionable, free thinking-minds, humankind
has to offer. . . KIDS.

Announcing a call for submissions for a kids exhibition
titled, "BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY".
OPENING May 16, 11am EST.

We know a lot of you have children who love to paint and
draw. We also know that there have been many times you've
looked at their work and thought to yourself--- that's
pretty damn good! We'll now is your chance (and theirs)
to show it.

We are joining together our local Brooklyn youth and the
youth from YOUR neighborhood to showcase some great young
talent in hopes of inspiring them to continue to use
creative expression throughout their lives.

...And what better way to do that than to offer them money!
If your child happens to sell their work at the exhibition
they will get paid for it, minus a small portion that will
go to a kids charity (TBA).

AS AN ADDED BONUS:

will submit one piece of work and allow kids
to add their collaborative efforts to it---
Those pieces will be auctioned off and a portion
of the proceeds will also go to charity.

So keep the kids home from school, crack open those poster
paints, get out the crayons and force them to make a
masterpiece Mommy and Daddy can brag about! --After all,
it will be carried LIVE on BROOKLYNITE TV with a dope musical
guest to accompany the show and LIVE kids graff.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: MAY 5
AGE RESTRICTION: 1-15
SIZE RESTRICTION: NO LARGER THAN: 14 inches WIDE x 20 inches HIGH (35.5 cm x 50.8 cm)
MEDIUM: Paint, crayons, spray, etc (anything goes-- "BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY")--
Preferably on canvas or wood-- (but heavy paper will be fine).

INFO: MUST HAVE CHILD'S NAME ON BACK with city and country.
Also must be accompanied by a contact info sheet for the
parent for guardian. Please adults & child's name, address,

Prince Paul has punched numerous holes through hip-hop. He joined Stetsasonic in 1984 as their DJ and later started producing and remixing artists like Big Daddy Kane, Boogie Down Productions, and Fine Young Cannibals. Through his inclusion of irreverent skits on De La Soul’s classic Three Feet High & Rising (one of the most creative, striking production jobs in hip hop history) he influenced the shape of every hip-hop album afterward, making the rapper’s sense of humor a major vehicle of putting your personality on wax.

After De La Soul, he teamed up with the RZA to form Gravediggaz. Still untouchable and unsurpassed, that music is essentially on its own plane. His solo album, Psychoanalysis (What is it?) is like nothing else in hip-hop and everyone should hear it. More recently, his incredibly diverse work from Handsome Boy Modeling School through his controversial “Politics of the Industry” has shown his ability to work with artists as far ranging as Cedric and Omar from the Mars Volta and Alec Empire. His latest work is Baby Elephant, an epic, harmonious interaction with legendary Parliament Funkadelic keyboard genius Bernie Worrell. Though extremely humble, he is consistently a gauge of what heights hip-hop may aspire to and will be live at Brooklynite April 4th.

REMED & ZBIOK "OWN THE BROOKLY(NITE)"

Simply put... last Saturday night belonged to two artists--- Remed and Zbiok. No matter what borough of NYC (and even some east coast states for that matter) you are from-- most were represented and braved a bit of a chill to see the exhibition entitled, "IT HURTS".

REMED spent the early part of the week leaving his mark throughout Brooklyn in a big way. Vibrant color & large scale murals with subject matter uniquely REMED can now be found on Malcolm X Blvd. in Bed-Stuy and Bergen Street in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (and we suspect other places too.)

At the gallery, Zbiok and Remed cleaned it up a bit and showed us they are not 'one trick ponies.' Both artists' exhibited works that showed a style and subject matter refreshingly new to New York City, which was also the prime reason for their pairing. Music producer MUX MOOL performed his special brand of lo-fi hip-hop which proved to be the perfect soundtrack for the night.

"IT HURTS" is meant to be an acknowledgment that everybody feels things strongly, that each of us is viscerally affected by people and events near to us. But even halfway around the world, a person or event can hit us like a force of nature. Loving someone so much it feels like an entity unto itself, feeling an overwhelming urge to change the world - nothing can make you more vulnerable, but nothing else will go as far as to amplify your joy.

A troubled economy, a planet in peril, a new leader taking the helm …so many questions left unanswered … IT HURTS

Brooklynite Gallery however, will pass on the government bailout in favor of something better. Instead we present— ZBIOK and REMED, "IT HURTS" our new exhibition a.k.a. gallery-size healing force.

Parisian street artist, Remed takes every style past its due date and makes it fresh. Art Nouveau and "Free to be You and Me" graphics of the seventies are made strikingly contemporary. If you were to synthesize into a single body of work, the "New Image" of the early eighties with the graffiti writers who entered the New York art world around the same time. . . . Remed would emerge. Experienced with a limited time frame for execution, Remed solves color interactions quickly and accurately. The English language is manipulated with formidable typographic skill and a vicious sense of style. You know Remed is special when you see his transmutation of the curved arms of the French avant-garde. He's paid his dues, he's dubbing over history.

"Addicted to color". . . Polish street artist- Zbiok makes work that can have the same effect on its viewers. Rooted in post-Iron Curtain Poland, he has ties to punk and hip-hop, but his work looks like no other artist's associated with either. The feel of eighties graffiti is there as an intangible, not limited to any one visual cue. His imagery is far reaching in the sources of influence it indicates. Sometimes matching a political sensibility to his electric colors and pop savvy, Zbiok's pieces are immediate, while inviting longer meditation on their full complexity. In a recent interview he noted the influence of music on his work, highlighting his all-inclusive scope as "jazz to death metal." His characters and iconography feel refreshingly alien to American street art thus far.
